WHO: The Collings Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit educational foundation devoted to organizing “living history” events that allows people to learn more about their heritage and history through direct participation. The Nationwide WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR is in its 18th year and visits an average of 130 cities in over 35 states annually. Since its start, tens of millions of people have seen the B-17 B-24 & B-25 display at locations everywhere. The WINGS OF FREEDOM tour is one of the most extraordinary and unique interactive traveling historical displays of its kind. WHY: The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR travels the nation a flying tribute to the flight crews who flew them, the ground crews who maintained them, the workers who built them, the soldiers, sailors and airmen they helped protect; and the citizens and families that share the freedom that they helped preserve. The B-17, B-24 & B-25 were the backbone of the American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945 and were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission. Despite the risks of anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the harrowing environment of sub-zero temperatures, many B-17s, B-24s, and B-25s safely brought their crews home. After the war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum to rebuild a nation in post-war prosperity and therefore very few were spared. The rarity of the B-17, B-24 & B-25 and their importance to telling the story of WWII is why the Collings Foundation continues to fly and display the aircraft nationwide. At each location we encourage local veterans and their families to visit and share their experiences and stories with the public. For aviation enthusiasts, the tour provides opportunity for the museum to come to the visitor and not the other way around! Visitors can find out more by visiting our website at www.collingsfoundation.org. For further information e-mail Hunter Chaney, Director of Marketing: hchaney@collingsfoundation.org Media Site: visit: http://www.collingsfoundation.org/media for further detailed information on the aircraft, Collings Foundation, and the tour as well as high-resolution photos for download.

Illinois General Aviation Community Reaches-Out to Local Politicians for Support
Group says Aviation Tax is Hurting Illinois
Chicago, IL (November 3rd, 2005) During the first meeting of its kind, The Chicago Area Business Aviation Association (CABAA) invited several political officials from the State of Illinois to attend their October 21st meeting held in West Chicago / Dupage Airport (DPA) at a corporate hangar located on the field.
Ed Green, vice president and general manager of the Springfield-based Garrett Aviation Service Centers, gave a presentation which urged lawmakers to abolish state aviation sales tax including that on aviation maintenance and explained how the current tax code is hurting Illinois. “You have a mobile product”, Green said, “they can go anywhere to get maintenance done”. Under the current 7% sales tax, an aircraft using an Illinois repair station for major maintenance items such as engine overhaul or phase checks, could easily see upwards of $15,000 in additional expense due to the tax. The same is true for aircraft purchases which would add an even higher amount to the bottom line, which in turn prompts corporations and individuals to go elsewhere to purchase their aircraft. Green then went on to show the group several examples of corporate flight departments who have located elsewhere to avoid the tax, thus costing Illinois jobs and commerce, not to mention the added value of having a major corporation headquartered in the state. Prior to Green’s presentation, CABAA asked several of the politicians in the audience to introduce themselves. Dr. Susan Shea, Director for the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics, took the podium with a brief introduction of her background and area of responsibilities, including that of dispersing federal dollars to Illinois airports for maintenance and modernization. She expressed a sincere interest in hearing from any of the 75 attendees concerning issues she could take to capitol hill or if they had a “wish list” of upgrades they’d like to see at their local airports.
Then Senator Steven Rauschenberger (R-Elgin) who is also a 2006 GOP Illinois Gubernatorial Candidate, said a few words and showed his support of general aviation. During his address, Rauschenberger denounced the midnight destruction of Chicago’s Meigs Field calling Mayor Richard Daley’s actions “irresponsible politics” which earned him resounding applause. His message also conveyed the importance of patience and persistence when championing new legislation or opposing potential new restrictions with regards to aviation and aerospace in Illinois.
CABAA’s President, Rick Milburn felt the meeting was a huge success stating that their progress was “a giant step forward in establishing a mutually beneficial interface between our members and Illinois officials and policymakers”. With several major corporate flight department managers and airport directors in attendance, the consensus echoed Milburn’s thoughts and CABAA members are looking forward to future meetings of it’s kind.

Chicago Area Business Aviation Association 2005 Charity Golf Event Raises Record Contribution
Tops previous year’s best; additional beneficiary named
Chicago, IL (September 15, 2005) The Chicago Area Business Aviation Association (CABAA) raised over $36,000 in charitable proceeds at the 2005 CABAA Charity Golf Classic, held at Prairie Landing Golf Club, West Chicago, IL on August 25. The amount raised was a record for this annual event, topping the previous high from a year earlier by over $10,000.
CABAA donated $30,000 to its primary beneficiary for this year’s event, Shepherd’s House, located in Manhattan, IL. The 8,000 square foot residential facility was established to provide a safe place for expectant mothers who do not have anywhere to live and are experiencing a crisis pregnancy. Shepherd’s House provides resources and services that establish a foundation for self-sufficiency that allows the women to care for themselves and their children.
Dedicating its support for the future of general aviation, CABAA also funded a total of $5,000 in scholarships, which were awarded to two well-deserving aviation students at Lewis University in Romeoville, IL. Scott Moran and Kenny Frank, Jr. were selected among several applicants as the scholarship recipients.
Event chairman Chris Jensen commented, “We couldn’t be happier with the success of this year’s golf charity. Space for golfers was sold out and sponsor participation was just incredible. We owe a debt of gratitude to all those who supported this event and made our charitable contributions possible.”

Chicago, IL (June 23, 2005) The Chicago Area Business Aviation Association (CABAA) has selected Shepherd’s House as the recipient for the 2005 CABAA Charity Golf Classic, to be held at Prairie Landing Golf Club, West Chicago, IL on August 25. In addition, CABAA will fund two, $2,500 scholarships for aviation students at Lewis University in Romeoville, IL.
The charity event, now in its seventh year, is conducted by CABAA to bring together Chicago’s business aviation community for a day of fun and camaraderie, but also to support a philanthropic organization that delivers an essential service to those in need in the greater Chicago community. A different charity is selected each year. This year’s recipient, Shepherd’s House, located in Manhattan, IL, was chosen among several applicants. It is a residential facility established to provide a safe place for expectant mothers who do not have a place to live and are experiencing a crisis pregnancy. Shepherd’s House provides resources and services that establish a foundation for self-sufficiency that allows the women to care for themselves and their children. The facility is an 8,000 square foot home that can accommodate 16 residents.
For the first time, a portion of the proceeds from the CABAA Charity Golf Classic will also fund two, $2,500 Scholarships for students majoring in Aviation Flight, Maintenance or Administration at Lewis University in Romeoville, IL. “It has always been a goal of our organization to create a link to the Chicagoland community by supporting an important and worthy cause. And we hope to do so with an even larger contribution this year,” said Rick Milburn, president of CABAA, adding, “What’s new this year is our financial support of students pursuing aviation as a career. And we’d like to carry this forward.”

Higher is Better Over Chicago
CABAA Champions New Procedures Allowing Higher Altitude Flying into Satellite Airports
Chicago, IL (March 14th, 2005) The Chicago Area Business Aviation Association (CABAA) has won approval from the FAA on two new procedures that will allow aircraft operating into satellite airports to fly at a higher altitude than previously directed.
For arrivals from the northeast into Aurora (ARR) and West Chicago (DPA) Airports, pilots may now file Northbrook VOR (OBK) to Rockford VOR (RFD) then their final destination airport. Expect to cross OBK at 14,000 and once in Rockford’s airspace, expect vectors to the destination approach.
For arrival from the southwest into Palwaukee (PWK) and Waukegan (UGN) Airports, pilots may now file Joliet VOR (JOT) direct to VEENA Intersection then their final destination airport. Expect JOT at FL240 and to cross VEENA at 11,000. Also expect an early turn once in Milwaukee (MKE) airspace.
CABAA is asking for feedback from any pilots using these new procedures so they may present it to the FAA. Once the evaluation period is complete, they will establish a STAR for each airport (ARR, DPA, PWK, and UGN). For a more detailed description on these recommended procedures or to report any feedback, please visit CABAA’s website at www.cabaa.com.
The Association’s ATC Committee is confronting several issues, one of which pertained to the consistent method by which ATC would route most inbound flights (except those entering from the west) over the city and Lake Michigan at 4000 feet. The committee has been meeting with Chicago’s Tracon, Chicago Center, and the FAA’s Midwest Tactical Operation in Des Plaines, where officials recognize the potential to enhance safety and operations in the area and are working closely with CABAA on other new procedures as well. Two such procedures would establish a new route east of O’Hare (ORD) to Palwaukee (PWK) and Waukegan (UGN) Airports, in addition to creating RNAV arrivals and departures for all the satellite airports.

Chicago Area Business Aviation Association Seeks-Out Local Beneficiary
(Thursday, February 17, 2005) The Chicago Area Business Aviation Association (CABAA) has announced that they are now accepting applications for this year’s golf tournament Charity Recipient.
The association raised over $25,000 during last year’s golf outing which benefited ElderDay Care Center of Batavia and the Tabitha House of Harvey. The proceeds from this year’s outing will benefit a worthy charity in addition to two newly-added scholarship awards. The Golf Committee in charge of organizing the event for CABAA feels strongly that they will be able to surpass last year’s award amount. In pursuit of achieving that goal they are reaching out to not only the aviation community, but the general community as well. “Our event goal as a local association is to celebrate each other as an aviation community while addressing a need of a local charity in Chicagoland. We hope to continue in that tradition.” said Chris Jensen, Chair of the Golf Committee.
To have your charity considered for this award, please fill out the application found on CABAA’s website at www.cabaa.com, or fax a request to (630) 293-6952 by February 28th, 2005. To become a sponsor for this charity event, please contact Chris Jensen at chrisj@genav.com or Kandi Spangler at kspangler@theairgroup.com. All proceeds donated are tax-deductible and will give the sponsor considerable visibility during the August event.

I am proud to be a part of those efforts.” The consortium of aviation professionals within CABAA come from a variety of backgrounds encompassing all faucets of aviation. CABAA NEWS & BRIEFS
WHO’S WHO at CABAA: It has occurred to me that since that first meeting at the AMOCO hangar at Midway Airport several years ago, there have been many changes in the CABAA organization. The most noticeable change in this writer’s opinion is the number of new members. We certainly have grown to a substantial number. With that growth comes many new faces. How many times have you been to a CABAA luncheon and you see someone you have never really met even though you may know their name and you wonder who they really are? How did they get to the position they are in or the company that they work for? What’s their background, what kind of hobbies do they have and what do they like to do outside of aviation? Well I have to admit that even though I’ve been around the Chicago Aviation Community for well over twenty years I still have those thoughts about the people in our industry. I find that there are a vast variety of folks with many different backgrounds that are very interesting in our organization. I have therefore decided that I will at least once a quarter point the spot light on one of our members that you might like to get to know a little better. As such, I will be doing a WHO’s WHO at CABAA once a quarter. My first subject will be Pete Messina who is Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of T-Bird Aviation at DuPage Airport. You may have met Pete at the recent CABAA meeting that they hosted. I’m sure you will enjoy learning more about Pete and his company. (This story will immediately follow this section). If you know someone that you think should be featured please feel free to email me at r.milburn@mchsi.com and let me know. Also don’t be surprised if I come knocking on your door someday with notebook and pen in hand. You might just be next. Your feedback and comments on these features will also be welcomed.
LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE: The Board of Directors has approved the formation of a Legislative committee to monitor political actions that may be happening that have some impact on our members. Alan Farkas will be heading up the committee of Joan Zaleski and Rick Milburn. The committee will be working closely with other alphabet organizations and local political figures to better in form our members and make our governmental representatives more aware of our organization. CABAA should be well informed of any actions affecting the aviation community in the Chicago area.
ATC COMMITTEE: The ATC Committee has been doing an outstanding job thus far. The committee is chaired by Carl Robst and Tex Hunter. This committee has had several meetings regarding approach procedures in to the Chicago area and the surrounding airports. These meetings have been well attended not only by our committee members but by several representatives from the FAA including some from Washington. Please refer to the text here on the website for more detailed information. Keep up the good work.
2005 GOLF COMMITTEE: Yes, the greens may be covered with white stuff but the Golf Committee headed by Chris Jensen of General Aviation Services, this year, is already planning the 2005 event. Letters will be going out shortly to all of last years sponsors so that they may reserve their sponsorship early this year. Last year we had over 54 sponsors of various levels and I’m sure that they will go fast this year. In addition to a charity receiving a donation this year, the Board of Directors has approved the formation of a Scholarships Fund to be given to Aviation Students. There will be more information on this when details are completed. Kurt Kuempel of North American Jet will be at the helm of the scholarship fund. Last years golf event generated $25,000 in net proceeds that went to two different charities. The goal this year is to top that and with all of our members participation we can do it I’m sure. Start getting your foursome together today.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Thanks to the efforts of Chairman George Yundt and the membership in general, we keep growing. It is membership renewal time and now is a good time to ask a friend to join. Membership applications are available right here on the website under the heading of Membership Information. You’ll find this on the left side of our home page.
Until next time so long and safe flying.
