CABAA Safety Day: April 21, 2008

We provided an educational, engaging and entertaining day of safety training for the membership of the Chicago Area Business Aviation Association on Monday, April 21st. With a focus on emergency procedures training and aviation safety, the event was hosted by Aspen Jetride) at the Dragon Leasing Hanger at the DuPage Airport. After a continental breakfast sponsored by NBAA and opening remarks by CABAA Safety Committee Co-Chairs Carl Robst and Norah Lenardic, participants moved on to the four seminars available given by MedAire, FlightSafety International and FACTS.

R.N. Linda Augustine of MedAire introduced participants to the realities of today’s travel environment in her Travel Health Seminar. We learned to recognize and cope with potential threats, both in-flight and on the ground. We also learned key prevention strategies to mitigate against health risks before departure and discussed current information from the AHA regarding the latest CPR technique.

FSI’s Hazardous Materials in Aircraft Scenarios provided an introduction to potential HAZMAT that may be carried aboard aircraft: oxygen bottles, dry ice, etc. We were also given a summary of the philosophy and purpose surrounding the need for HAZMAT regulations, provisions for crew and passengers, HAZMAT labeling, classifications and documentation, hidden HAZMAT and HAZMAT incident response.

FACTS (from AirCare International Ltd.) provided two of the day’s seminars. In Hypoxia Awareness, we learned the signs, symptoms and effects of high altitude hypoxia, and witnessed volunteer participants experience a “decompression” using the FACTS Reduced Oxygen Breathing Device. In what was an equally informative, and surely the most entertaining, presentation of the day, the FACTS V Cabin-Class Aircraft Emergency Procedures Simulator provided the means for participants to personally experience hard turbulence, in-flight smoke and evacuation through exit windows.

We concluded a very successful Safety Day with a prize drawing that included 45-minute flights in a T-6 Texan, a Marchetti (both courtesy of Dragon Leasing Corporation), and a half-hour flight in a Eurocopter (courtesy of Superior Ambulance Service).

We’d like to extend great thanks to all of our sponsors, presenters and especially participants for making CABAA Safety Day 2008 a huge success!
